TVS were approached by the University of Glasgow Sport Department and the brief from the university was to make this an iconic venue for higher education sporting competition, with a dream of being among the best sporting surfaces in Scotland.
Out of the systems available, the Robbins Bio-Channel star system was selected due to concerns over the temperature range, airborne humidity and location of the sports facility.
The University of Glasgow joins the University of Kent in the TVS Robbins family. Glasgow now host what we believe the best basketball and multisport floor in Scotland.
TVS Group were brought in to replace the flooring, breathing fresh life into this aged facility.
Based on the age of the schoolchildren, and the sporting requirements identified by the school staff, sports flooring specialists from TVS Group, quickly identified a seamless sports grade polyurethane as the best route forward.
After careful consideration and comprehensive design meetings, a two-tone colour scheme in squirrel grey and sky blue was selected, along with custom graphics to enhance the visual appearance of the floor.
The school wanted to cater for badminton, netball, basketball and volleyball to a good standard, maximising the potential for curriculum delivery, as well as outside lettings for these and other sports.
A two-tone polyurethane sports flooring system caters for the performance and aesthetic requirements of the school.
Kent is the first UK university to have a sustainably sourced Robbins solid maple wood floor installed by its UK-based partner TVS Sports Surfaces.
Robbins, which was founded in 1894, is a preferred supplier of competition and training surfaces to 80% of teams in the billion-dollar NBA. Of the last 27 NBA Championships, 22 were won by teams who play or train on the company’s courts.
The TVS/Robbins partnership was chosen after an exhaustive evaluation by the University of Kent, with quality and longevity being major factors in the final
decision along with the need to meet stringent international and UK sports standards.
The substructure work was undertaken within a week and the new flooring, using maple from both the USA and from Canada, was completed by TVS Sports Surfaces on schedule.
TVS Sports Surfaces is committed to supporting the continued increase in sporting and physical activity of all athletes, across all ages and abilities. We can help your project with advice, specifications, full installations or refurbishment of facilities, tailored to your individual sporting requirements.
The most important considerations for sports flooring are intended use case and who will be using it. Amateurs and professionals demand different qualities. Multi-use surfaces like polyurethane and vinyl can be used in sports halls and gymnasiums for five-a-side football, basketball and other court games.
Other sports demand a specialised surface, like outdoor hockey which needs to be played on artificial turf with a low pile, and pro basketball which requires timber. The sport and the level of play (amateur, professional) are key considerations.

MORE CASE STUDIESSports pitches are typically multi-use surfaces with football, hockey, rugby, American football and basketball played on them.
However, the performance of a sports pitch depends on the sport it is used for and this is determined by the pile height of the artificial grass. Longer artificial grass is better for football, but shorter grass is better for hockey.
